Among the varied indigenous communities inhabiting Liberia, the Dei, also known as the Dewoin, hold a distinct place. This coastal group is historically rooted in the Montserrado and Bomi regions, located near where the nation's capital, Monrovia, was established.
Liberia officially acknowledges sixteen distinct ethnic groups within its borders, each contributing a unique language, historical narrative, and cultural practices to the national tapestry. Our magazine aims to introduce the Dei as an integral component of this rich and diverse heritage.
This feature serves as an introductory guide to the Dei people, offering a glimpse into their culture rather than a comprehensive anthropological examination. Variations in customs are natural across different communities and family units, underscoring that the deepest understanding comes directly from the people themselves.
